Latest Updates from Our Project:

One week in!
7 months ago – Wed, Mar 13, 2024 at 11:26:19 AM

Hey team! We're nearly one week into this campaign and all things considered, we've had a pretty admirable start. As of this update, the campaign is 35% funded with just over two weeks to go. In a perfect world, we'd be able to get to 50% by the end of the weekend, so that's what I'm hoping for.

Since you've received this update, you've already backed it, and our team is so incredibly thankful for that. We do, however, want to know if you'd be able to either 1.) tweet a link to the campaign (www.nockcomic.com) or 2.) tell a friend about it.

But now that the sales pitch is out of the way...

As a writer, I love nothing more than to read through scripts and examine the processes of other creators in the industry. That's why I'm a pretty open book when it comes to the process of making comics. For this update, let's look at how the first page of Nock #1 was made.

Even before I get to the script, I traditional do a beat-by-beat treatment for the story at hand. It's something super simple with the major plot points that need to be hit.

  • World Warriors fighting Epitaph
  • Nock messes up
  • Vulcan beats Epitaph

From there, I'll expand that into what I call an outline. I'll take a sheet of paper and beginning labeling each line #1, #2, #3, and so on with each number representing the respective page. In this case, the beginning of #Nock #1 looks something like this:

  • 1: Establish the scene. The World Warriors fight Epitaph as Nock looks on from afar. Gloomy, rainy night.
  • 2: World Warriors introduction. Each member gets a "credit sequence."
  • 3: Vulcan, the team lead, is knocked out.

From the outline, I begin to script. Some writers go Marvel method and focus on just the dialogue, allowing the artist ultimate freedom to do layouts as they want. I like to provide a little direction.

The script then went on to Nicolas, who does quick little layouts for approval. This will be the last time I provide notes on the art itself, given Nic's layouts are clear enough to know whether any changes need to be made. If any changes are need, he's quick to update the layouts otherwise he goes straight into pencils and inks.

Then naturally, the inks are sent (along with the script) to Viviana and Neil for colors and letters, respectively.

And that, my friends, is how I make comics in a nutshell. Next week, I'll do a more condensed version on Page 2. Until then...
